Antunes’ research bridges art, science, and technology through two intertwined lines of inquiry: the algorithmic representation of the human body and non-verbal communication—using motion capture, procedural animation, and collective behavior—and the enhancement of urban walking experiences through augmented reality, geolocation, and sound.

Antunes is the Principal Investigator of PORTSIGN – Portuguese Sign Language Dataset and Recognition Project and local coordinator of TRANSPER – Transdisciplinary Learning Methodology in Performing Arts and Technology, focused on critical thinking and digitalization in higher education. Antunes was formerly PI of Ghost Dance, exploring embodiment in the synthesis of dance movement and virtual reality. A former Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at MIRALab (University of Geneva) and BioISI (University of Lisbon). His career spans academia and innovation, including teaching and research at Lusófona University, University of Greenwich, City University London, the University of Lisbon, and co-founding AnabiVirtual, a studio creating AR/VR cultural experiences. Antunes holds a PhD in Computational Arts and Technologies from Goldsmiths, University of London.
